The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) George M. Bonnett (ASN: 0-2074325), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery C, 37th Field Artillery Battalion, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 September 1951 in the vicinity of Pia-ri, Korea. On this date Lieutenant Bonnett, forward observer, was attached to a friendly unit which was defending its position against a counterattack by a numerically superior enemy force. During the ensuing action intense hostile small arms, artillery and mortar fire pinned down the friendly unit. Realizing that the unit was in a perilous position, Lieutenant Bonnett voluntarily and without thought for his own safety, crawled several hundred yards under intense hostile fire in order to locate hostile emplacements. Upon observing them he directed accurate and effective artillery fire on hostile positions and despite the continuous enemy small arms and sniper fire directed at him, Lieutenant Bonnett continued his action until hostile forces were repulsed. As a result of his immediate action, friendly forces suffered a minimum of casualties. The gallantry in action and devotion to duty displayed by Lieutenant Bonnett reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
