The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Emory R. Bonner (ASN: RA-18286808), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 21 May and during the early morning hours of 22 May 1953, a raiding party of Company B had the mission of engaging and destroying the enemy in the vicinity of Pung-Myon, Korea. As the friendly elements were advancing toward enemy-held territory, they encountered a numerically superior hostile force and were subjected to an intense hostile mortar and grenade barrage. While the battle progressed, Private Bonner, a squad leader, sighted a machine gun which was unattended. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he worked his way through an intense hail of fire to the location of the weapon. The machine gun was under a heavy barrage, which resulted in Private Bonner being unable to operate it at that position. He slowly crawled back to friendly lines, dragging the gun behind him. Upon reaching his destination, he placed the weapon in an advantageous location and set up an effective base of fire. He was instrumental in stopping two large enemy assaults and inflicting numerous enemy casualties. Private Bonner’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
