The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Charles K. Blum (ASN: 0-36898), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 June 1951. Captain Blum was leading his company forward for an assault upon Hill 50 near Chorwon, Korea, when it was suddenly subjected to severe hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire. Remaining in the lead of his company amidst the continued enemy fusillade, he directed them safely forward until crossfire from the right flank halted the movement. Locating one machine gun emplacement, Captain Blum led a squad in an assault, personally killing four enemy soldiers and eliminating the rest. He then directed a successful assault upon the original objective, capturing it and routing the foe. The gallantry and daring leadership exhibited by Captain Blum reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
