The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Donald G. Bludworth (ASN: 0-2263191), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Battery A, 39th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 26 August 1951, near Nolta-ri, Korea, Lieutenant Bludworth was attached as a forward observer to Company B when that unit, occupying Hill 266, was subjected to a heavy enemy artillery barrage. Realizing a hostile attack was imminent, Lieutenant Bludworth immediately moved to an advantageous but exposed position where he directed artillery fire upon the foe. Despite the intense fire about his position, he continued to call for fire missions that shattered the enemy assault. Lieutenant Bludworth’s superb gallantry and resolute courage materially contributed to Company B’s successful defense of Hill 266 and reflect the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
