The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jackie W. Bishop (ASN: ER-18337136), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Toch’on, Korea, Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, was under intensive attack by a strong enemy force. Private Bishop, an aidman attached to this unit, noticed two riflemen had been wounded by an exploding hand grenade and immediately rushed through the lethal barrage of small arms fire to their assistance. After elements of the infantry company were compelled to withdraw, Private Bishop remained in the perilous area between friendly and enemy lines, unshaken by the vicious cross fire, and continued to render medical aid and assist in the evacuation of the wounded. Private Bishop’s gallant and selfless concern for the welfare of his fellow soldiers despite the grave danger to his own life reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
