The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Bertram J. Bishop (ASN: 0-961373), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Heavy Mortar Company, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 2 August 1950, Lieutenant Bishop commanded a platoon of heavy mortars supporting a battalion of infantry which was attacking near Chinju, Korea. While serving as fire control officer from a forward vantage point, Lieutenant Bishop was seriously wounded but refused evacuation. When communications were cut, he made his way to the mortars and directed fire. Despite fierce machine gun fire and though in great pain, he continued to move from his observation post to the mortars in order to bring the most effective fire on the hostile forces, until he fell unconscious. By his indomitable courage and grim determination Lieutenant Bishop was instrumental in facilitating the infantry attack. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
