Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 280 (August 27, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Medical Service Corps) Harral A. Bigham (ASN: 0-975627), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the Medical Company, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. During the early evening hours of 22 November 1951, near Chuggojan, Korea, Company I was subjected to a fierce barrage of enemy artillery, rocket, and mortar fire. Although it was neither expected nor required of him, Lieutenant Bigham immediately left the comparative safety of the Battalion aid station to go to the Company I area and assist in the evacuation of the casualties. With utter disregard for his personal safety, he moved about the impact area administering to the wounded, never stopping to seek cover as the barrage increased in intensity. He worked unceasingly throughout the ensuing barrage until all of the casualties had been cared for. His courageous and determined actions under such hazardous conditions were instrumental in saving many lives. Lieutenant Bigham’s gallant and unselfish deeds reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
