Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 319 (November 11, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Irvin N. Betz (ASN: RA-15257818), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. When the company outposts in the vicinity of Chungam-ni, Korea, were attacked by numerically superior hostile forces during the night of 29 August 1950, Sergeant Betz volunteered to go to the rear for critically needed ammunition. Braving the heavy hail of enemy fire, he successfully completed one trip to the ammunition supply point and had started back on his second attempt when he was wounded in the arm. Despite his painful wound, he continued on to obtain more ammunition and was mortally wounded upon reaching he beleaguered outposts. The courage, resourcefulness and unselfish concern of Sergeant Betz for his comrades reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Army.
