The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Charles E. Best (ASN: 0-58831), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, the enemy made three mass attacks on G Company’s defense line near Taejon-ni, Korea. In the course of the engagement, Captain Best, constantly exposed to enemy fire, moved about the company perimeter checking the defenses to see how they were bearing up under the hostile assaults. After the third wave of enemy troops had charged the area, it became necessary to effect an immediate withdrawal and firing upon the enemy, Captain Best added much protecting fire as the unit fell back. As he was leaving the former positions, Captain Best, hearing the cries of a wounded soldier, located him in a nearby trench under heavy automatic weapons fire and retrieving the stricken man from the precarious position, assisted in carrying him approximately 400 yards to an evacuation point. The calm gallantry and great courage exhibited by Captain Best reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
