The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Robert L. Bertram (ASN: RA-15419493), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 2 September 1950, near Haman, Korea, a severed communication line broke vital contact between Sergeant Bertram’s unit and its artillery support. Although the area was subjected to an intense artillery barrage, he immediately advanced into the deadly fire, tracing the line until he found the break and repaired it. Returning to his unit, he again exposed himself to repair an essential telephone, calmly continuing his mission until instantly killed by an exploding shell. Sergeant Bertram’s courage, determination, and selfless devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
