Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 53 (January 31, 1952)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Clarence Ruben Berreth (ASN: US-56087829), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 4 October 1951, during Company C’s attack against a well-entrenched enemy on Hill 281 near Chungse-Re, Korea, the Second Platoon initiated the assault. Private Berreth, automatic rifleman in the lead platoon, was assigned to a squad delivering supporting fire for assaulting elements, when his squad moved through an area saturated by hostile machine gun and mortar fire. Fearlessly placing his weapon in a position affording a good field of observation, he began delivering effective fire on the enemy. Following the first burst from his weapon, Private Berreth drew the full fury from five hostile machine guns and a mortar upon his exposed position. Courageously continuing his mission alone after the overwhelming enemy fusillade had converged on him and wounded his assistant gunner, Private Berreth quickly knocked out two hostile machine gun emplacements. While operating his weapon without assistance, he was mortally wounded by an exploding enemy mortar round. The gallantry and selfless bravery displayed by Private Berreth reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
