The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John P. Berres (ASN: 0-62276), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 28 November 1950, near Majon-ni, Korea, Lieutenant Berres, a platoon leader, observed that elements of Company A were pinned down by heavy enemy fire. Unhesitatingly and heedless of his own personal safety, he led a seventy-five millimeter recoilless rifle section over open terrain and under intense enemy fire to a position from which effective fire could be placed upon the enemy. From this position he continually exposed himself in order to direct the fire of the section. Lieutenant Berres’ initiative and heroism on this occasion enabled a successful advance on the objective and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
