The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Peter F. Bermingham (ASN: 0-1058723), United States Army, for gallantry in action as Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 4 March 1951, in the vicinity of Chigui-ri, Korea, an element of Major Bermingham’s command was attacked by an especially determined and fanatical enemy in overwhelming numbers. The enemy pressed the attack with such ferocity and speed that this portion of his battalion was in dire threat of being overrun by sheer force. Major Bermingham immediately contacted a group of tanks and hastened to the threatened area. There, under the intense and concentrated fire of enemy small arms and mortars, from an exposed position, with total disregard for his own safety, he personally directed the fire of the tanks with such devastating effect upon the enemy that their attack was broken up and stopped. The gallantry in action displayed by Major Bermingham was a source of inspiration to his troops and contributed greatly to the repulsion of the enemy attack. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
