The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Frank A. Bermingham (ASN: 0-1061619), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 10th Field Artillery Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Korea. On 28 February 1952, while flying on a voluntary mission near Tuhyon-dong, Korea, an area approximately twelve miles beyond the Division’s main line of resistance, Lieutenant Bermingham plotted and reported numerous dug-in positions, supply and bivouac areas. Despite the intense hostile anti-aircraft fire which forced him to constantly use evasive maneuvers, Lieutenant Bermingham accurately directed the devastating fire of a forward battery of 155 millimeter guns on all worthwhile enemy targets. Realizing that if his plane should be hit or become disabled he could not glide to friendly lines, Lieutenant Bermingham disregarded his personal safety as he remained in this hazardous area, locating profitable hostile targets and accounting for approximately sixty enemy casualties, seventy percent destruction of a supply area and the destruction of numerous gun emplacements. After remaining in the area for three hours and being unable to deliver more fire orders because of a radio failure, he returned to his base. Lieutenant Bermingham’s gallantry and technical skill reflects the highest credit upon himself and the military service.
