The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Burton Berman (ASN: RA-12324800), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company B, 10th Engineer Combat Battalion, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. During the period of 23 to 25 May 1951, Sergeant Berman was a squad leader in an engineer platoon which was providing support for a tank company in an attack against the enemy at Habae-jae, Korea. During these three days, he maintained a lead position in front of the column of tanks as he, heedless of the continuous enemy fire, located and removed anti-tank and anti-personnel mines from the road, providing a safe passage for the tank column. As the operation continued into the second day, Sergeant Berman, observing an infantryman fall to the ground wounded and knowing that the aidman was already occupied, ran to the stricken soldier’s side and began administering first aid. When an enemy machine gun opened fire upon him, he courageously moved his wounded comrade through the hail of fire to a position of safety. The gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Berman reflect high credit upon himself and the military service.
