Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 180 (June 12, 1953)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Lloyd Bergland (ASN: US-55322610), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On the night of 8 June and during the early morning hours of 9 June 1953, elements of Company A had the mission of effecting an ambush patrol against the enemy in the vicinity of Kachil-Li, Korea. Shortly after the group gained their positions, contact was made with a large enemy force. As the fire fight ensued, Private Bergland, the communications man in the assault group, accurately fired his weapon at the attacking hostile forces. When communications were broken, he exposed himself to enemy fire in an attempt to restore the broken lines. A short time later, he volunteered to retrieve a machine gun which was unattended as a result of its crew being wounded. Private Bergland worked his way through intense enemy fire to the position of the weapon. He then pulled the weapon back to friendly positions, and was again exposed to enemy rifle fire. While the battle continued many of the friendly forces were wounded by hostile fire. Private Bergland went to their aid, offering them encouragement and evacuating them to safe positions. Private Bergland’s outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
