The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Richard W. Bennett (ASN: RA-19295502), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company L, 3rd Battalion, 19th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in action at Anju, Korea, on 6 November 1951. Private Bennett’s squad, maintaining contact between companies, was attacked by an enemy force estimated at well over platoon strength and was forced to withdraw. With utter disregard for his own safety, Private Bennett moved to a position from which he could bring automatic rifle fire to bear on the enemy in order to cover the movement of his comrades. The enemy soon found Private Bennett’s position and swept the area with intense fire. Although he was wounded in this action he continued to cover the withdrawal of his squad until his position was overrun and he was killed, The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Bennett, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
