The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Richard M. Beam (ASN: RA-11165637), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a Medical Aidman of the Medical Company, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 19 September 1950, when the company positions near Uiryeng, Korea, were attacked by numerically superior hostile forces, Corporal Beam screened the entire area, despite its intense enemy small arms and machine gun fire sweeping the position, to administer medical aid to the wounded soldiers and assist in their evacuation. By his personal courage, technical skill and alert attention to duty Corporal Beam was responsible for the saving of numerous lives. His selfless devotion to his comrades reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Medical Service of the United States Army.
