The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Corporal [then Private First Class] Remigio Battista (ASN: ER-12237850), United States Army, for heroic achievement during ground operations against a hostile force as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 25 April 1951, near Popsu-dong, Korea, Company A, 1st Battalion, while occupying a defensive position, was attacked by a numerically superior enemy force. As the fierce engagement continued, Corporal Battista, becoming aware of the shortage of ammunition in his platoon, voluntarily left the safety of his covered position and raced 100 yards through heavy enemy fire to the supply point. Heedless of the hostile fire, he made repeated trips over the exposed terrain to re-supply his unit. Corporal Battista’s heroic initiative materially contributed to the repulsing of the enemy attack and reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.

Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 562 (December 15, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Remigio Battista (ASN: ER-12237850), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 July 1951, as Company A attacked Hill 682, near Chich-on, Korea, Corporal Battista’s mortar squad, furnishing support fire, was suddenly subjected to intense hostile machine gun fire and a barrage of mortar shells which painfully wounded Corporal Battista and completely destroyed his position. Selflessly and with disregard for his personal safety, he crossed exposed terrain amid a hail of enemy fire to aid three men of his squad who had been severely hit by the mortar fragments. Repeatedly crossing 25 yards of open terrain, he successively carried two wounded men to safety and, although weakening rapidly from his own wound, dragged the third out of the danger area. His fearless actions saved the lives of three comrades and contributed greatly to the morale of the unit and success of its mission. Corporal Battista’s singular gallantry reflects great credit upon himself and the military service.
