Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 124 (May 7, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Douglas A. Barrow (ASN: 0-1289858), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company Commander, Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 4 February 1951, near Chomchog, Korea, Captain Barrow was commanding Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, when a tremendous volume of accurate enemy automatic and mortar fire pinned his company down and prevented it from advancing beyond the forward slope of a hill. Suddenly, a heavy barrage of artillery fell into the forward area of the company, killing and wounding many of the men in the unit and seriously wounding Captain Barrow in the back and right leg. With complete disregard for his own personal safety and despite the withering small arms fire coming from the enemy positions, he crawled across open areas to the wounded men to administer first aid. Coincident with these actions he shouted encouragement and advice to the shattered remnants of his command, which enabled them to contain an enemy company attack. Despite his serious wounds, he refused evacuation from the area until all his men had been evacuated. Captain Barrow’s gallantry and concern for his men reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.
