Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 20 (January 4, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Jerome F. Barnwell (ASN: RA-38398287), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 77th Engineer Combat Company, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 6 August 1950, a platoon advancing across a barren hillside in the vicinity of Haman, Korea, was ambushed by a large hostile force. The strongly entrenched enemy directed devastating machine gun and mortar fire from its position on the high ground and pinned the platoon down. Braving the withering fire, Sergeant Barnwell advanced alone toward an enemy machine gun in an effort to relieve the pressure on his platoon but was mortally wounded before he reached the position. His supreme sacrifice inspired his comrades to assault the position and rout the hostile force. Sergeant Barnwell’s conspicuous courage, grim determination and selfless devotion to the welfare of his comrades are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
