Headquarters, 3d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 524 (November 19, 1951)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Harry C. Barnhart (ASN: RA-13157644), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company F, 2d Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 3 October 1951, near Chorwon, Korea, during F Company’s attack on Hill 400, the Third Platoon was subjected to intense enemy fire. Sergeant Barnhart, observing that both his platoon leader and platoon sergeant had fallen under the withering barrage, voluntarily assumed command of the unit although wounded himself. Heedless of the incessant fire, he moved among his men instilling courage and confidence within them; he then advanced to the front of the platoon and aggressively led the inspired men in a charge which terminated with the capture of the objective. The courageous initiative and gallant leadership displayed by Sergeant Barnhart reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
