The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant [then Corporal] James E. Anderson (ASN: RA-15230594), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 9 February 1951, when Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, launched an attack against enemy-held positions on a steep mountain slope near Sinhyon-ni, Korea, Sergeant Anderson’s platoon was pinned down by hostile automatic weapons and sniper fire. With no regard for his own personal safety, Sergeant Anderson voluntarily crossed a ridge and proceeded up an exposed draw in the face of intense enemy fire to assault an enemy automatic weapons position. He accurately hurled hand grenades into the enemy entrenchment, killing all the occupants and enabling him to capture the enemy automatic weapon. After this enemy position was effectively silenced, the platoon was able to assault the objective and successfully secure it. Sergeant Anderson’s outstanding gallantry and selfless devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and exemplify the high traditions of the military service.
