Stults (ASN: RA-16889898), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Stults distinguished himself by valorous actions on 20 June 1968 on the Dong Nai River near Long Binh. Specialist Stults voluntarily exposed himself to great danger by helping to control and suppress a fire at a quartermaster fuel jetty. Disregarding his safety, he manned firefighting equipment in close proximity to the intense heat from two burning fuel barges that threatened to explode at any time. At one point, he jumped onto one of the blazing craft to kick into the river a fuel drum which appeared to be leaking gas and endangering the lives of his fellow fire fighters. Specialist Fourth Class Stults’ heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

    Action Date:

    July 21, 1967

Headquarters, 18th Military Police Brigade, General Orders No. 108 (October 2, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Specialist Fourth Class Randall R. Stults (ASN: RA-16889898), United States Army, for heroism, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Stults distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 21 July 1967 while serving with the 3d Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, at Xa Gia Tan, Republic of Vietnam. When the convoy that Specialist Stults was supporting came under attack by a numerically superior force of Viet Cong, Specialist Stults without regard for his own personal safety exposed himself from the rear hatch of the V-100 laying down a heavy base of supporting fire for the other Military Policemen who were aiding the wounded. Specialist Stults continued to engage the enemy although wounded by shrapnel in both hands. When Specialist Stults’ M-60 machine gun became inoperable he continued to engage the enemy until he had spent his M-14, M-79 and .45 caliber ammunition. During the encounter with the enemy, Specialist Stults without regard for his own safety exposed himself to enemy fire while aiding a seriously wounded comrade into his vehicle and administering first aid. Through his courage he contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Specialist Stults’ personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
