The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Warrant Officer One (WO-1) John D. Dismer (ASN: W-3152830), United States Army, for heroism while participating in aerial flights. Warrant Officer Dismer distinguished himself by heroic actions on 14 June 1966, in the Republic of Vietnam. On this date, he was serving as aircraft commander of an UH-1B helicopter flying wing in a light gun team. The CH-47 Chinook which the gun team was escorting was shot down by an enemy .50 caliber machine gun and made a forced landing in the Ho Bo Woods. Warrant Officer Dismer engaged and silenced the initial targets and descended to a low level orbit in order to draw fire and attention away from the stranded helicopter. A machine gun fired at the lead aircraft, but its exact position could not be determined. Warrant Officer Dismer again maneuvered his aircraft in such a manner as to draw fire. On the subsequent gun run, his rockets made a direct hit on the machine gun position. Even though his aircraft was subject to continuous small arms fire for more than one and one half hours, he skillfully rationed his ammunition allowing continuous suppression of the area. The effective fire from his crew caused the destruction of an enemy machine gun and contributed to the gun team’s success in preventing the Viet Cong from placing direct fire upon the downed aircraft. Warrant Officers Dismer’s actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
