The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Lynn C. Hooper (ASN: OF-106140), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force on 8 November 1967. Captain Hooper distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of a UH-1C helicopter of the 189th Assault Helicopter Company, 1st Aviation Brigade, on a combat mission. He was in command of two armed helicopters supporting a special forces team in heavy contact with a determined, well armed enemy force. While attacking the enemy, the wing ship in his flight was shot down by intense enemy fire, and crashed into the jungle. He then called for the flight of helicopters which had just departed, to return and rescue the downed crew. He continued to attack the enemy positions despite the deadly hostile fire and forced the enemy to remain away from the rescue site. After expending all ammunition on his helicopter, he chose to remain and attack the enemy with personal weapons and smoke grenades in order to make the rescue possible. He pressed his attack until all of the rescue ships had departed, and only then did he withdraw from the battle and seek safety. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
