Headquarters, United States Army, Vietnam, General Orders no. 439 (January 30, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Military Intelligence Corps) Stephen Leonard Galloway (ASN: 0-5329343/17696381), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Galloway distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 30 May 1967 while serving as an advisor to a two-company Vietnamese force on a search and destroy operation in Sadec Province. While crossing an open rice paddy, his unit was heavily attacked by a Viet Cong battalion firing automatic weapons and small arms from well-fortified positions in a nearby treeline. He immediately led an assault into the face of the enemy weapons despite bullets striking all around him. His radio operator was felled by an enemy bullet, and Lieutenant Galloway returned to the exposed position to trat the man’s wound even though the insurgents raked the open area with automatic weapons fire. Continuing to brave the withering Viet Cong barrage, he repaired the radio and called for gunship strafing runs on the hostile positions. As the helicopters arrived, he stood in the open under a curtain of fire and brought devastating strikes on the determined enemy which enabled his men to escape the killing zone. After carrying the radio operator to safety, he established a strong defensive perimeter and directed his men in repelling repeated enemy assaults until reinforcements arrived. First Lieutenant Galloway’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
