The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel Jesse Brooke Matlack (ASN: 0-8639), United States Army, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Chief of Staff, 36th Infantry Division, from May 1944 to March 1945 and from April to October 1945. (This award supersedes the awards of a Bronze Star Medal and a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster to the Bronze Star Medal to Colonel Matlack, for services from 4 May to 21 September 1944, as published in General Orders 322, European Theater, 29 November 1945, and General Orders 46, European Theater, 20 February 1946, respectively.)
