The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to First Lieutenant (Armor) Edward L. Bruton, United States Army, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with. First Lieutenant Bruton distinguished himself by heroic actions on 29 June 1969, while serving as a Platoon Leader with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 34th Armored Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While established at the Phu Hoa District Headquarters, a large explosion occurred in one of the bunkers within the compound. With complete disregard for his own safety, Lieutenant Bruton exposed himself to the intense heat and the danger of explosions within the bunker in order to evacuate several of the wounded soldiers within the emplacements. After the third man had been evacuated, M-72 light anti-tank weapons and claymore mines began to explode, which made further entry into the bunker impossible. Immediately, Lieutenant Bruton organized a carrying party to evacuate the wounded personnel and another team to help extinguish he fire. His valorous actions were responsible for saving several lives. Lieutenant Bruton’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
