The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Martin A. Yurik (ASN: 33394018), United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 8 November 1944 in France. As Company C was assaulting a hill, withering enemy machine gun, rifle and bazooka fire from enemy 300 yards to the front caused casualties which left Private First Class Yurik alone in his squad. He laboriously crawled 75 yards to a point from theirwhich he swept the enemy line with intermittent bursts from his machine gun. Out of ammunition, he crawled 75 yards back for the two boxes left by his ammunition bearer who had been hit. Returning, he continued firing at the enemy while the company reorganized to resume the attack, until he was killed by a German shell. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
