The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Sergeant Mark A. Schutte, United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy. On 21 December 1986 at 0015 hours while performing military police duty in the Mannhelm community, Federal Republic of Germany, Sergeant Schutte and his patrol partner observed a German apartment building on fire. Sergeant Schutte and his partner immediately went into action, notifying local German emergency personnel and began evacuating the five story structure. Without regard for his own personal safety and at risk of life, Sergeant Schutte crawled up smoke and fire filled halls to rescue an elderly woman. After the fifth floor was engulfed in flames he re-entered the building to save a young woman and her infant. Sergeant Schutte’s bravery and outstanding actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of military service, reflecting great credit on him, the Military Police Corps, and the United States Army.
