The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain George Eldon Throckmorton, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an A-1 Tactical Fighter Pilot in Southeast Asia on 20 December 1971. On that date, Captain Throckmorton led a force of rescue helicopters deep into hostile territory to evacuate sixty wounded personnel that were in direct contact with opposing forces. Subjecting himself to intensive ground fire, he made repeated passes dropping extremely accurate ordnance to secure the area, escorted the helicopters to the landing zone, and then flew protective cover to insure the successful completion of the rescue mission. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Throckmorton reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
