The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain George Eldon Throckmorton, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with the 1st Special Operations Squadron in Southeast Asia on 12 April 1972 to 13 April 1972. During this period, Captain Throckmorton flew in support of an extremely hazardous and complex search and rescue mission attempting to recover a crewmember located in one of the most heavily defended segments of the Ho Chi Minh Trail in southern Laos. In spite of the continued volume of hostile ground fire directed at his slow moving aircraft, Captain Throckmorton remained in the area and coordinated air strikes against lethal anti-aircraft emplacements. His conspicuous actions were instrumental in silencing the hostile ground fire and effecting recovery of the distressed crewmember. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Throckmorton has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
