The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Private First Class Harold C. Moore (ASN: 37514050), United States Army, for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on Mount Mataba, Luzon, Philippine Islands, 16 April 1945. On this date the tank on which Private Moore was cannoneer took part in a coordinated attack on a heavily-fortified enemy position in conjunction with troops of the Infantry. Voluntarily, Private Moore accompanied his tank over many miles of mountain trails, highly unfavorable for tank action, from which any slip would have resulted in a precipitous drop with serious injuries or death to the crew. In pressing the attack on the enemy position the tank was constantly exposed to heavy automatic fire and hostile artillery fire. Point blank fire from Private Moore’s gun and fire from the tank’s other weapons killed many of the enemy and knocked out six machine guns, aided materially in the reduction of this strong pocket of resistance and deprived the enemy of a point from which the advance had been observed and delayed. Private Moore’s coolness under fire, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, reflects great credit on himself and the military service.
