Johnson, United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy while serving as a Medical Aidman with Company C, 2d Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, during a mission to secure a landing zone near Bong Son in January 1966. When his unit was engaged in battle with a large Viet Cong force at a landing zone, Private First Class Johnson crawled through intense automatic weapons fire across an open field to render first aid to the wounded. With bullets striking all around him, he moved from soldier to soldier tending their wounds and offering encouragement. Locating a group of three wounded soldiers lying in the middle of the landing zone, Private First Class Johnson remained with them for five hours, until they were safely evacuated. Through his courage and determination, he saved the lives of many soldiers.
