The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Specialist Fourth Class William C. Warwick (ASN: US-56909718), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Fourth Class Warwick distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 3 March 1968 as the crew chief of an Ambulance Helicopter of the 45th Medical Company, 68th Medical Group, 44th Medical Brigade, performing a mission near Dong Tam. His crew responded to an urgent evacuation request from a surrounded infantry platoon. The unit was in the middle of a North Vietnamese bunker complex. As the fierce battle raged on the platoon suffered more casualties. Informed that the condition of the wounded was critical, Specialist Warwick unhesitatingly volunteered to attempt the extraction. As his helicopter descended through the deadly enemy fire, he remained exposed to it to insure that the aircraft had the necessary physical clearance to land. After landing, he left the ship and quickly loaded two patients aboard. The craft then moved on to other pickup sites to rescue the scattered casualties. Upon descending in to the final landing zone, Specialist Warwick jumped out of the ship, crawled to the wounded, dragged them back to it and loaded them aboard. His selflessness contributed to the safe evacuation of six critically wounded soldiers. Specialist Fourth Class Warwick’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
