The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Technician Fourth Grade Lawrence D. Brown (ASN: 33411203), United States Army, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy while serving with the 17th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, 70th Infantry Division, near Amenau, Germany, on 4 August 1945. When a comrade suffered a severe cramp and sank in mid-stream of a river, Technician Fourth Grade Brown without hesitation, boldly dived from a height of ten feet into the shallow water, and despite a strong, cold current, swam swiftly, at the risk of his own life, to the drowning man. With the aid of a companion he pulled the unconscious man ashore. Expeditiously and effectively he administered artificial respiration and restored the man to consciousness. Technician Fourth Grade Brown’s courageous plunge into the swift river and his heroic rescue of his comrade reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
