The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Charles Anthony Brown (ASN: 0-5334761), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Brown distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 5 May 1968, while serving as the Battalion S-2 with the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, during a combat mission near Khe Sanh, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit’s perimeter came under an intense enemy rocket and ground attack, Lieutenant Brown left his bunker to maneuver his men into a good defensive position and to administer first aid and evacuate the wounded personnel. On several occasions, Lieutenant Brown had to stop and fight hand-to-hand with the enemy. At one time a portion of the perimeter was cut off by the insurgents. Disregarding his own safety, Lieutenant Brown led an assault on the enemy and succeeded in forcing them back. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
