(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Captain Andrew A. Gerrie, United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in connection with military operations against the enemy while commanding a unit of the 25th Infantry Division in a combat operation near Ap Dong, Vietnam, in February 1968. As friendly forces advanced on a Viet Cong stronghold, the enemy opened up with heavy automatic weapons and anti-tank rocket fire. With anti-tank rockets exploding around him, Captain Gerrie led his tanks and armored personnel carriers in a direct assault against the enemy position. He led his heavy vehicles over the top of the enemy bunkers and destroyed them by dropping hand grenades through small openings. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Gerrie shifted his position from flank to flank in order to better direct and control his units. As a result of Captain Gerrie’s actions the enemy suffered a crushing defeat.
