The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” (Navy Award) to Colonel (Air Corps) Bernard A. Bridget (ASN: 0-16561), United States Army Air Forces, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Chief of Staff of the Tactical Air Force, TENTH Army, during the preparation for and subsequent accomplishment of the assault and capture of Okinawa Shima, Ryukyu Islands, from 6 December 1944 to 30 June 1945. Colonel Bridget’s superb ability as an administrator and leader, his tactical brilliance, and his diplomacy in helping to meet the problems of a joint Army, Navy, and Marine Corps command contributed in large measure to the success of the operation. He was gallant under fire, never seeking cover during the frequent bombing, strafing and artillery attacks if he could be of service in an exposed area. On frequent occasions he traveled fearlessly through country that was lightly held and where enemy snipers were a constant hazard. During the planning phase he bore much of the responsibility for preparing the force for the operation, helping to write the operation plans, assembling and echeloning equipment and personnel, and maintaining liaison with the various branches of the service which were participating. Landing on Okinawa the day after the initial assault, he rendered invaluable assistance to the Commanding General in setting up headquarters, putting the captured airfields into operation in the minimum of time, and in carrying out the tactical mission of the force. He worked with prodigious energy and stamina, and his sound judgment, fair-mindedness and great professional competence were of inestimable value to the command. His performance of duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Military Service. (Colonel Bridget is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
