The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Henry Leeroy Lavender (AFSN: 0-70126), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an A-1 pilot in Southeast Asia on 13 December 1968. On that date, Captain Lavender flew wing position in a flight of two aircraft in support of friendly forces who were under attack by a large hostile force. Because of the close proximity of the opposing forces, extremely accurate ordnance delivery by the A-1s was essential. Captain Lavender made repeated passes at low altitude and, despite heavy ground fire, placed all ordnance directly on target. This action inflicted heavy casualties on the hostile force and greatly relieved the pressure on the friendly position. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Lavender reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
