The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Douglas M. Fain (AFSN: 0-80349), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as an F-4D Pilot over Southeast Asia on 23 August 1968. On that date, Captain Fain’s aircraft sustained severe battle damage while he made repeated accurate ordnance deliveries in the face of overwhelming opposing ground fire. His personal daring and unwavering determination despite great personal danger resulted in the destruction of an important hostile command post and a defensive anti-aircraft gun position, and his professional aerial skill enabled him to successfully return his seriously damaged aircraft to an emergency airfield, thus preventing loss of life and preserving a valuable tactical aircraft. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Fain reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
