The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Donald Thurman Duke (AFSN: 0-3040456), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an )-2d Battalion Pilot near Qui Thon, Republic of Vietnam, on 3 April 1968. On that date, Captain Duke was flying a psychological warfare mission in support of Republic of Korea forces. Captain Duke employing exceptional airmanship directed his aircraft into the target area, although deteriorating weather and the close confines of the mountainous terrain posed a serious threat to the mission. He proceeded to orbit the area of heavy contact dispersing thousands of “Chieu Hoi” leaflets and broadcasting a special appeal to the hostile forces. Although encountering hostile ground fire, Captain Duke achieved all mission objectives. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Duke reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
