Under the provisions of Department of Defense 1348.33-M, the Secretary of Defense of the United States of America takes pleasure in awarding the Defense Superior Service Medal to Colonel Gerald Francis Custin (AFSN: 0-3130102), United States Air Force, for exceptionally superior meritorious service from 2 April 1984 to 1 July 1987, while serving as Commander, European Defense Analysis Center, United States European Command. During a period marked by crises and low-intensity conflicts, Colonel Custin consistently displayed outstanding initiative, superb judgment, and the finest leadership qualities as he led the European Defense Analysis Center in providing critical, time-sensitive intelligence to European Theater operational commanders. Colonel Custin was directly responsible for making significant improvements to his Command’s capabilities, products, and operations. The improvements which Colonel Custin brought about have already significantly improved United States and Alliance warfighting and deterrence capabilities and will pay handsome dividends for years to come. The distinctive accomplishments of Colonel Custin reflect great credit upon himself, the United States Air Force, and the Department of Defense.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Captain Gerald Francis Custin (AFSN: 0-3130102), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an EB-66C Electronic Warfare Officer over North Vietnam on 8 February 1968. On that date, Captain Custin analyzed and located unfriendly radars which threatened top priority tactical and photo reconnaissance missions flown by Air Force and Navy aircraft. His outstanding determination and performance in the face of constant personal danger from hostile ground and air attack was a significant factor in the success of this vital electronic warfare mission. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Custin reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
