The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Major Charles C. Crabb, Jr. (AFSN: 0-3155899), United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a U-2 Aircraft Commander at a forward operating location of the 100th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing in Southeast Asia on 29 November 1975. On that date, while flying an extremely hazardous mission, Major Crabb displayed exceptional airmanship and professional skill in securing intelligence information of vital importance to the nation’s security. His achievement contributed immeasurably to the successful accomplishment of the Wing’s mission. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Major Crabb reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, 20 July 1942, takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit to Colonel Charles C. Crabb, Jr. (AFSN: 0-3155899), United States Air Force, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as Commander, 5073d Air Base Group, Shemya Air Force Base, Alaska, from 19 June 1990 to 20 June 1991. During this period, the leadership, drive, and dedication demonstrated by Colonel Crabb set in motion a long-range plan to overcome environmental compliance neglect that has plagued Shemya for many years. Colonel Crabb implemented the Fix Shemya Execution Plan, providing continuity to smoothly transfer project management for the ongoing one hundred seventy million dollar Shemya military construction program during annual personnel changeovers at this extremely remote Aleutian Island location. The singularly distinctive accomplishments of Colonel Crabb reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Orders No. G-105 (January 8, 1969)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Charles C. Crabb, Jr. (AFSN: 0-3155899), United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force as a UH-1F Helicopter Gunship Aircraft Commander, near Duc Lap, Republic of Vietnam, on 23 August 1968. On that date, Captain Crabb voluntarily descended into an extremely hostile area from which he had just received intense ground fire, while defending the Duc Lap Special Forces Camp, in order to aid in the rescue of a downed American pilot. By fling an extremely low level firing pass over the scene of the rescue, Captain Crabb drew the hostile ground fire to his aircraft enabling the rescue party to reach safety. Only after his co-pilot had been wounded and his aircraft damaged by hostile ground fire did Captain Crabb depart the area. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Crabb reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.

Headquarters, 7th Air Force, Special Orders No. G-2519 (August 15, 1968)The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” to Captain Charles C. Crabb, Jr. (AFSN: 0-3155899), United States Air Force, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a UH-1F Helicopter Pilot in Southeast Asia on 12 February 1968. On that date, Captain Crabb aided in the rescue of a six-man long range reconnaissance team that was on the verge of being surrounded and overrun by a hostile force of company size. Captain Crabb flew numerous low level firing passes at the hostile positions to give the team protection and time to move to a safer landing zone for rescue. Despite intense automatic weapons fire that damaged his aircraft and wounded one of his gunners, he continued low level firing passes to keep the unfriendly forces occupied while an unarmed helicopter made a successful rescue of the team. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Captain Crabb reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
