The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Stephen Lynn Amdor (AFSN: 0-80213), United States Air Force, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force as an F-100F Forward Air Controller of the 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Phu Cat Air Base, South Vietnam, in action over North Vietnam on 1 September 1968. On that date as on-scene commander of the successful rescue of a pilot down in the heavily defended southern panhandle, Captain Amdor’s actions transformed a hazardous and difficult operation into a well coordinated effort. Through his courage and aggressiveness in the face of hostile anti-aircraft fire and rapidly deteriorating weather conditions, he marked the hostile gun positions and then led the armed fighters in formation on their ordnance delivery passes through the low cloud ceiling to silence them. By his gallantry and devotion to duty, Captain Amdor has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
