The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Dennis C. Daggett (ASN: 0-5334371), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Lieutenant Daggett distinguished himself on 17 November 1967, while assigned as a Platoon Leader with Company C, 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. On the day cited, Company C was conducting search and destroy operations southwest of Ban Blech when it made contact with an estimated battalion size force of the North Vietnamese Army that was dug in on a ridgeline. With complete disregard for his own life, Lieutenant Daggett led his platoon on an assault against the numerically superior enemy forces. His courageous assault was halted only when it was decided that to continue the assault would have meant being isolated within enemy lines. Quickly calling up reinforcements, he again led an assault on the enemy bunkers, moving within five meters of the enemy positions and forcing them to withdraw. As the enemy regrouped and began to pour intense and accurate fire from three sides, Lieutenant Daggett organized his men again, and though exposing himself to heavy fire, he directed the withdrawal of his men so that artillery could be placed on the enemy. By his own personal display of courage, cool-headed leadership, and devotion to duty he forced the enemy to be on the defensive and then retreat, resulting in a complete victory over the enemy. Lieutenant Daggett’s outstanding display of courage, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
