The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Kiyomi Yamada (ASN: 30104267), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 442d Regimental Combat Team, 92d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 18 July 1944, in Italy. When an enemy counterattack threatened his platoon’s exposed right flank, Technical Sergeant Yamada crawled forward alone to a position from where he could observe the enemy’s route of approach. As the enemy came within 15 yards of his position, Technical Sergeant Yamada threw several hand grenades at the enemy, killing one and wounding another and forcing the remainder to withdraw in disorder. His courageous action, which was instrumental in repelling the enemy counterattack, reflects credit upon himself and the United States Army.
