The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) George H. Worf (ASN: 0-1307608), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 179th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division, in action near Carroceta, Italy, on 16 to 20 February 1944. Lieutenant Worf was in command of a line of defensive outposts over which he maintained close personal supervision. The defensive line held firmly in the face of heavy enemy fire while Lieutenant Worf remained in close control moving from outguard to outguard, directing fire, and encouraging his men though he was frequently under heavy enemy small arms and artillery fire, including one particularly severe enemy concentration, until he was wounded 20 February. Lieutenant Worf’s leadership and gallantry in holding this defensive line in the face of extremely stubborn enemy resistance are worthy of the best traditions of the military service.
