The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Carroll H. Wood (ASN: 0-27024), United States Army, for gallantry in action in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Battery C, 490th Field Artillery Battalion, 11th Armored Division, in action against the enemy. During the period from 3 January 1945 to 5 January 1945, near Willimont, Belgium, while serving as a forward observer, First Lieutenant Wood displayed unusual devotion to duty. On 3 January 1945, First Lieutenant Wood continued to adjust artillery after two of his observation posts had been accurately covered by enemy artillery and mortar fire. On 5 January 1945, after having been ambushed and extremely weak from loss of blood, First Lieutenant Wood crawled and walked 800 yards to friendly elements to secure aid for other wounded members of his party. First Lieutenant Wood’s gallant courage and tenacity of purpose were an inspiration to those with whom he worked and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
